About Us / Max Milburn
MCIAT ACIOB
Director
Max’s illustrious architectural career started at a young age when he would regularly cycle to a neighbouring village to watch a housing development take shape.
In 1954, he became a full-time trainee at J Owen Bond and Son Architects in Norwich, and one of his first projects was to assist a company partner on a competition entry to design the Sydney Opera House.
12 years later, Max was offered a partnership in the Mitchell and Weston practice in Bury St Edmunds – leading to the creation of Piper Whalley Milburn which later became Milburn Rees Claire and Milburn & Co; finally becoming Milburn Leverington Thurlow with the merger of Lionel’s practice in 2002.
Having had previous links with the Hanover Housing Association, he co-founded the Suffolk Housing Society. Max was commissioned by legendary Oscar-winning film producer, Irving Allen, to design a “luxurious” golf complex in Fornham St Martin before winning competitions to build the new Denny Bros building as well as new furniture retail stores for Glasswells.
Max’s professional interests and specialist areas of work include one off houses and refurbishment of existing buildings and listed properties. Max’s love of architecture has not just remained in professional confines and he has built his own homes in the villages of Carlton Colville and Whepstead in Suffolk.
A keen supporter of many local organisations and charities, Max defines his role within MLT Architects now as “sage and mentor” but promises to tackle any new challenge with customary vigour, if and when it is needed.
